Trump Promotes his Foreign Policies to Asian Allies

The moment business tycoon and reality television celebrity Donald Trump assumed the office as the 45th President of the United States last January 2017, along with all the circus prior to the election, its citizens have become critically divided in opinion and reflection of the present administration. True to his character as an unusual, bold and domineering leader, issuing executive orders and memoranda that are rather unconventional and against the views of many, it has been a constant challenge to his government on how to expound the president’s character not just to his own people, but predominantly, to the country’s foreign partners.
Ignatius’ (2017) article describing Trump’s character towards having partnerships with Asian nations, aims to offer a conservative narrative of the leader’s motives and intentions. Depicting him as “a vain man who loves to be flattered” and “hungers for success and wants the credit for it, Ignatius desires to paint Trump’s picture as a selfish man who wants every aspect of his government and its foreign policies to work for his own good and interest. The article intends to influence readers who are particularly living overseas, those who do not have a first- hand account of what is truly happening in this country, to be critical of Trump’s government. He surely knows that people in the US pretty much have a resolute political opinion and partisan perspective whether it is pro or anti- Trump, thus influencing them would be futile.
His claims and argument clearly manifest his own disapproval with Trump’s important political decisions. This highly-polarized standpoint reduces Ignatius’ credibility to offer a sound, impartial and intellectual assessment of the president’s resolutions. He specifically explained Trump’s policies that affect not only his people but much more so, his relationship with important allies. He elucidated how Trump greatly values his connection with Saudi, Japan, and China because they are the world’s powerhouse in terms of economy. He further clarified the president’s previous indifference towards China but had a complete turnaround when he realized the giant’s importance in this game called politics. These, according to the author, only affirms Trump’s motives to use US’ foreign relations and bend it to serve his best interests.
Though he presented rational points when it comes to the president’s stance on nuclear weapons, his use of strong, disparaging words framed from his own allegation and assessment makes me think twice to be supportive of his ideas. This article, which portrays an unscrupulous president to foreign nations, does not help our country become united but further makes it more divided and argumentative.
